Πριν τα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 90 το surfing ήταν άγνωστο στην Ελλάδα. Κι όμως, γύρω στο 1999, στην παραλία της Κολυμπήθρας, στη βόρεια ακτή της Τήνου (και σε λίγα ακόμα σημεία της χώρας), εμφανίστηκε μια παρέα με surfers που καβάλησαν τα κύματα. Δέκα χρόνια μετά, η "παρέα" αυτή μεγάλωσε, και περιλαμβάνει πλέον αρκετά μέλη ώστε η ιδέα για ενοικίαση σανιδιών και εκμάθηση surf μοιάζει πλέον ρεαλιστική. Γιατί άραγε δεν είχε διαδοθεί το άθλημα του surfing στην Ελλάδα τόσα χρόνια, ενώ το windsurfing ανθεί εδώ και τρεις δεκαετίες? Πως ήταν άγνωστο αυτό το σπορ σε μια χώρα που περιβάλλεται από 14.000 χιλιόμετρα ακτογραμμή, όπου αναρίθμητοι ύφαλοι κάνουν τα κύματα να σκάνε? Κανείς δεν γνωρίζει. Γεγονός είναι πλέον πως ο αριθμός των surfers αυξάνεται συνεχώς, και επιτέλους το πιο διαδεδομένο, εθιστικό και όμορφο σπορ στον πλανήτη είναι πραγματικότητα και στη χώρα μας.

Το Tinos Surf Lessons απο το καλοκαίρι του 2010 προσφέρει ενοικίαση σανιδιών για όλες τις κατηγορίες surfers και τύπους κύματος, καθώς και εκμάθηση, ατομική ή ομαδική, αλλά και ενοικίαση bodyboards, skimboards, κανώ και καγιάκ. Είναι ένα από τα λίγα και πρώτα τέτοια εγχειρήματα στη χώρα και το πρώτο στις Κυκλάδες.

Η Τήνος, με μια ποικιλία από παραλίες για surfing όπου το κύμα "λειτουργεί" ανάλογα με την κατεύθυνση των ανέμων, με μια ασύγκριτη φυσική ομορφιά μακριά από τα πλήθη των τουριστών και με ευκολία πρόσβασης από τα λιμάνια της Ραφήνας και του Πειραιά, είναι πια ένας θαυμάσιος προορισμός για surf διακοπές.

Before the 1990s, none could have thought that exotic surf scenes would ever appear on a place like Tinos, the holy island of the Virgin Mary. During the past 10 years, little by little, surfers seen on Tinos multiplied fast, so the idea for a surfboard rentals & surfing tuition project seemed realistic.

Why there was no surf scene in a country with a coastline of about 14.000 kilometers? This is a mystery yet to be resolved. Windsurfing has always been quite popular, but surfing stayed unknown until the end of the 90s - with very few exceptions that date back to the 70s. Fact is, the local scene is starting to boom, surf shops open, dudes (and chicks!) are learning to surf and exploring the Greek breaks - and Kolibithra on Tinos is considered one of the best.

The Tinos surf lessons project, started by local surfer John Vidalis, is one of the very first in Greece and the first in the Cyclades. It offers surf tuition, surfboard rentals for every level, and also bodyboard , kayak, canoe and skimboard rentals.

The island of Tinos, with a multitude of breaks around its coast (with Kolibitrha bay being the best and also the base of operations for the project), an unmatched natural beauty away from hectic tourist crowds, unspoilt folkore and fast access from the ports of Athens, Tinos is now a great surfing holiday destination.
